The study of acoustics is the most fundamental part of learning to understand what sound is and how it occurs.

So what is Sound?

It’s vibrations that travel through the air, or another medium, and can be heard when they reach a person’s or animal’s ear.

So what is Noise?

It’s actually the same thing, except that we generally refer to noise as sounds which occur when we don’t want to hear them!

So what is Acoustics?

Acoustics is the interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of all mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including vibration, sound, ultrasound and infrasound.

Institute of Acoustics

Through the Acoustics part of this website I illustrate the knowledge I have gained from the Acoustics modules of the course.  This covers the fundamentals of what sound is, description of how human hearing works, practical application of Sabin formula and theory to treat a room, an essay on the benefits of applying acoustic treatment to a restaurant or cafe space.
